KEEP READING AT YOUR OWN RISK. SPOILERS OF SHUDDER, THE LATEST JASON AND AZAZEL BOOK WILL BE DISCUSSED HERE.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
If you’re here, I assume it’s because you’ve read the book. 🙂
And I’m eager to know what you think.
Possibly, I jumped the shark? I mean… vampires. (Well, sort of.)
As usual, here’s a little bit about how the idea for the book came together. I read this fantasy book earlier in the year by Cinda Williams Chima, about a guy who was trapped in a school with no outside contact, and that kind of stuck in my head. Also, in the summer, I got this idea about nephilim and vampires, and I was trying to write a very different kind of book using the same “big reveal” that shows up in Shudder. There was a guy who found out he was a nephilim, and he had to fight off a bunch of vampires–
No. Wait. I remember exactly where that idea came from. It came from the remake of Footloose. (What? My mind is weird.) There was this scene where the bad girl was sauntering off and the main guy was pouting, and I thought, “Wouldn’t this scene be cooler if she had some kind of secret, like she was killing monsters or something?”
Anyway, so then I formulated the nephilim/vampire idea, which morphed into the guy finding out he was a nephilim, and the girl being a badass nephilim vampire killer who showed him the ropes.
But I never finished that idea.
So, then, in August, I was going to write this story about zombies, where the government was keeping all of these people who were immune to zombie bites prisoner and studying them. And then I thought of that Cinda Williams Chima book. And then I thought of my vampire idea. And I was like, “Whoa, what if the vampires were keeping the nephilim captive so that they could drink their blood?”
And I was like, “Yeah!” And I put that idea on my survey for people to vote for, and about twelve people voted for it, so this is for you twelve people!!
Anyway, it wasn’t until October that I was like, “What if Jason was a nephilim? He can heal really well.” And then I had to spend time making the ideas work together, and then I wrote the book.
So, what did you think? About vampires? Nephilim? The reemergence of Jude? Five-year-old Chance? New characters like Grace and Boone?
Finally, don’t forget that reviews are appreciated.
